Igniters

Igniters (spark plugs) provide the spark or heat source needed to light the burner during startup. ATS can supply igniters for virtually any type of burner, helping customers replace failed ignition components quickly and keep equipment operating safely.

Igniter Tips

  • Gas stream for quick light-off, but not buried too deep where heat can damage the electrode.
  • Check the spark gap, make sure the igniter is not grounding out on metal or burner tile, and confirm the spark is aimed where ignition needs to occur.
  • Inspect the ceramic for cracks, because cracks can let the spark track through the insulator instead of jumping Start with igniter placement because even a strong spark will not light reliably if it is not in the right spot.
  • If the igniter sparks but the burner still struggles to light, do not assume the igniter is the only problem. Verify pilot gas pressure, main gas pressure, air settings, and light-off position. A good spark will not light consistently if the fuel-air mixture is too lean, too rich, moving too fast, or not reaching the spark.
  • Cracked ceramics can cause weak spark, misfires, delayed ignition, or complete ignition failure.
  • After placement and condition are verified, check for 120V primary power to the ignition transformer and secondary power of 6000V with an appropriate meter.
  • Inspect the ignition cable and connectors for loose fittings, damaged insulation, moisture, corrosion, or poor grounding.
